Suzhou International Science-Park Data Center Receives First Tier IV Design Certification in Asia
Data Centers Worldwide Realize Benefits of Uptime Institute Tier Classification Standard
New York, NY (July 15, 2010) – Uptime Institute (Institute) today announced the first Tier IV Certification of Design Documents in Asia awarded to Suzhou Industrial Science-Park’s Comprehensive Data Center (SISDC) in Suzhou, China. The Institute’s international Tier Classification System (I-IV) ensures a data center’s infrastructure is designed and built to provide uptime in line with an organization’s business requirements.
“We applaud SISDC’s management for redefining high performance in the Asian marketplace by completing a Tier IV design,” said Julian Kudritzki, vice president, Uptime Institute, LLC. “SISDC’s Tier award reinforces that the Tier Classification System is a truly applicable and valuable global standard.”
SISDC is located at Creative Industrial Park in Phase 5 of Suzhou International Science Park (SISPARK). Launched in May 2009 with a construction area of 452,000 square feet (42,000 square meters), SISDC is an important public technical service platform in Suzhou Industrial Park that is expected to start operations in September. It will provide a wide range of services to high-tech R&D companies, enterprises, internet service providers, emerging telecom providers, and government organizations.
“The dual objective of our Uptime Institute Certification is to ensure we designed a facility that meets the highest ranking of the Uptime Institute’s international standard, and to provide our customers with third-party, unbiased verification of our intent to deliver the highest level of service,” said GU Zonggen, general manager, Suzhou International Science-Park Data Center. “During our Design Certification process, Uptime Institute provided many professional and precise recommendations to help us design the best possible solution.”
The only other Uptime Institute Certification in Asia is a Tier III Design awarded to Samsung’s Suwon Data Center in Seoul, Korea.
The Tier Classification System, as established in Tier Standard: Topology, defines data centers in accordance with four Tier levels (I-IV). According to this rating system, Tier IV sites are capable of the highest level of uptime by providing both maintenance opportunities and fault response. Tier Certification is a two-phase process that includes a review of the design and concludes with a review of the constructed facility.
Additionally, the Institute just announced a third Certification for site management. This Certification (Gold, Silver, Bronze) will rate the effectiveness of a site’s response to the behaviors published in Tier Standard: Operational Sustainability. Operational Sustainability is a tool for data center owners, operators, and managers to mitigate human error—the leading cause of data center outages. The Operational Sustainability Standard also addresses risks associated with the building itself and the site location.
